Elisa Valentine is a self taught abstract artist from the West Coast of Canada. She explores the contrast between the static and the variable, building texture and dynamism through colour, or the absence thereof, each work intended to unearth her interpretation of love, loss, and the tangible and intangible layers they reveal to us over time.
‘Every time I begin a new canvas, I bring his love with me.’
After the sudden loss of her brother in 2023, Valentine inherited his beloved paint brushes. At first reluctant to use them, she slowly began to incorporate using them into the creation of her pieces. Working the paint with tools he held dear has transformed her art in ways she couldn’t possibly have imagined. ‘I find new strength and inspiration every time I move to my easel,’ Valentine says. As one gallery director poignantly observed when discussing the power that fuels her work - “It seems as though there’s a conversation happening between two artists.”
In her current series, ‘something different happened when…’ Valentine dives a deeper into this idea of a dialogue without speaking. Within the title of each work Valentine contemplates an unfinished sentence, one begun with herself or in conversation with another. Thoughts left unspoken. Feelings left unsaid. She then proceeds with the piece. Once painted, each piece becomes a living but incomplete exchange - words suspended in paint, time, and air.
‘For me it’s a quiet commentary on life, and the enduring legacy of love.’
studio Valentine was born from her desire to h0nour her brother and his passion for creative expression by bringing the artistic process, and the depth of emotion it houses for all of us, within reach.
She is now available for commissions.
